Explore Your Surroundings.
Take the time to explore with pairs of Scouts or Rovers; this way, when one of them stumbles across the inevitable Mindworm, the other unit can attack it.
Believer Tactics: Start With a Holy War.
If you're a member of the Lords Believers, it pays to be aggressive early, because their +25 percent attack will be easily offset once factions start building advanced units. Be a bully during early expansion; pick on all the weaker factions you meet.
Believer Tactics: Who Needs Research.
As a Believer, you will need to make up for a potentially crippling Research penalty. With Fundamentalist Politics, you'll be immune to enemy Probe Team activity, but more importantly, you'll easily build experienced Probe Teams which can procure research data. Keep an eye out for the University's closest border and then send in the Teams. The Believers and the University are often at odds; however, ironically, it's in the Believers' best interest to have a prospering University from which to steal the technology they (and you) need.
In the Beginning, Grab Land.
Build Colony Pods whenever feasible, and push your borders outward. Accompany your Colony Pods with garrison troops, so the newly built base won't have to waste valuable early resources--which should be spent on Recycling Tanks or a Children's Creche--on building its first garrison.

Choose Your Friends Well.
Diplomacy is an important part of situating your empire. It pays to find a friend or two and keep them for the long haul. The bonus in Commerce and Traded Technology is generally worth occasional compromises or gifts. In order to benefit the most, you should align yourself with someone who has lots of cities, because commerce is calculated by the number of cities each party has.
Get the enemy to surrender if they are weaker than you.
When you're about to attack a city, sometimes it pays to hail the Faction Leader and demand that he surrender. If you're powerful enough and he turns it over, then you've spared yourself some casualties.
Count Your Chickens Before They Hatch.
When hurrying production, you can save energy by using the Partial Payment option. If you keep in mind the amount of minerals your base will produce on the next turn, you can leave that number of slots open in the Building box, and they'll be filled by your base's mineral production.

Drill for Roadways and Energy.
Drilling to the Aquifer can create a river near inland cities making an effective Roadway of sorts, and providing additional Energy production as well.
Watch the AI in Action.
If you're overwhelmed by the amount of detail, then don't be afraid to set Terraformers on Autopilot and let Governors handle your bases. You'll learn more quickly by watching what the AI does than by trial and error.
View Unexplored Regions.
Hold the Left Mouse Button down when getting ready to move a unit. Move the unit over the map grid. As it passes over each grid square, coordinates and distance will be displayed, along with text associated with landmarks and cities, even if the square is unexplored.
Set A Building Queue.
You can set a building queue, right-click the list of facilities you've created, and save it to a named template. This will let you load queues for your bases without having to sift through the list every time.
Illegal Bore Building.
Supposedly you can't build Thermal Bores next to each another. But you can if you start building the second one before the first one is complete. You can also raise terrain around one after you have built it. A straight line of five Thermals is awesome.

Alpha Centauri Cheats.
Mix Up the Rank and File
It's more effective to build weaker units that complement each other than to go mad bulding the most expensive units first. Build a mix of Infantry to attack bases, Rovers to cover open terrain, Artillery to soften defenses, Aircraft to control the skies, and Ships to threaten sea bases. Wait until you amass several forces before sending them on an assault.

Inciting Drone Riots.
Groups of Probe Teams can complement each other's efforts by inciting Drone riots to prep a base for a Mind-Control Probe. You can tip a city into Drone riot status during your own turn, cutting the cost of Mind Control in half (the Drone riot will last through the turn after the one it was created in). Also, if you're trying to retake a base you originally built, the cost of Mind Control is always halved. Couple this with the extra Drones in a captured base, and you can cause havoc while buying back your conquered bases at a very reasonable rate.
Disbanding For Money.
In desperate situations or to make money in order to win, disband units in a base to add half their cost in minerals to whatever the base is building.
Keep Your Early Bases Huddled.
Bases can overlap borders for smaller, more easily defended empires and reduced Inefficiency penalties (which are partly a factor of distance). Also, an early network of roads between nearby bases is vital to shuffling around your defenders and protecting your empire.
Mind Over Armor.
Psi combat is just as effective against your 24-12-1 Singularity Shock Troops as it is against your 1-1-1 Scout Patrols. Don't rely on your thicker armor and bigger guns when Demon Boils come calling. Late in the game, make sure your garrisons have high Morale or some specific defenses against Psi combat (preferably both).
Gaian Tactics - Cloning Vats.
Because they're most likely to embrace slow-growth Green Economics, the Gaians of all factions benefit most from Cloning Vats, which automatically grow their bases every turn.
Maximize Your Farming Early On In The Game.
Remember that you can take only two Nutrients from a square until you research Gene Splicing (a Build 3 technology that should be an early priority for any faction), so don't bother putting Farms in choice, rainy terrain that already produces two nutrients. Instead, build them in moist terrain.
Speed Up Your Terraforming.
Building Formers on Speeder Chassis ultimately saves time because they can move into a square and start Terraforming on the same turn. It also makes it easier for Formers to get into thick Fungus to clear it.
Hive Tactics: Efficiency Rating Advantages.
Efficiency rating for the Human Hive will never drop below zero (note that this doesn't mean you won't lose any energy to Inefficiency, just that you won't suffer worse than average effects). Thus, the Hive can enjoy Planned Economics and Police State Politics without suffering the drawbacks. The former will even further boost your Growth and Industry advantage, while the latter will make your faction a more effective war machine.
Make the Most of Monoliths.
Monoliths will heal units, so it's wise to use them as marshaling points for your invading forces. Remember that each unit gets one free Morale upgrade from a Monolith, so use these wisely on your more experienced troops. Each time a Monolith "trains" a unit, it has a 1 in 32 chance of disappearing.
